Shultz has written about health and parenting for The New York Times, The Washington Post, Newsweek, Readers' Digest, AARP’s The Girlfriend, Next Avenue, NBC’s Today.com and many other publications.  She is the author of From "Mom To me Again" (How I Survived My First Empty-Nest Year and Reinvented the Rest of My Life) has some solutions for those left with an empty nest, how to survive and thrive. Nothing prepares you for your children leaving the nest.

I remember after I left home my father got choked up by the mark on our oak tree where the rope used to hang for our swing when we were growing up.

When our first two kids left the nest it was so empty at the dinner table, where we were used to lots of Laughter, stories, and antics of the day. I mourned the loss for two years

I cried when I left my youngest at kindergarten the first time I left him, because he was fine without me

I cried when we dropped our same son off to his college dorm room. When it was time to go it was all too soon. The time is over all too soon.

The thing is they will be fine without us. It is us as parents that will feel the greatest sense of loss.

Today we will bond over making peanut butter & jelly sandwiches decorated with hearts and smiley faces. How we put hearts notes in our children's lunches that said I love you.

Today’s episode is a little different, because I am being interviewed by Kim Peek on Power Up Your Performance Podcast. Kim created Power of the Run and is a breast cancer survivor.  Our episode was all about Obstacles being opportunities in disguise. I tell my story and a deep realization I had when I was on the internet reading about someone receiving The Jane Goodman award for empowering women at the

YWCA. As I read on I realized this article could’ve have been about me. This took me back to a time 29 years ago when I was scared, alone, and afraid. I got extremely choked up. This cut straight to my heart reminding me of my WHY. I had this huge full circle moment remembering the dream that was in my heart 29 years ago when I left my ex because I and my children were victims of domestic violence. I left with nothing. I was scared how was I going to make it, how I was going to feed my kids, put a roof over our heads. Married at 18 and pregnant 3 months later, I had never even worked a full time in my freaking life. How was I going to take of us? My first full time job was at the YWCA. This was where I saw and worked with battered women, homeless, and addicts. I knew I did not want to live in my story. I wanted to help them not to live in their story, but to create a new story in which we were living as victors not victims. I said someday I’m going to help women so they don’t go through what I did. I knew I didn’t have the tools and the resources at the time, but now I do.

I have been working with women for 29 years. Today as I sit on the eve of my grand opening of The Sisterhood of SWEAT I had a Huge Realization that I created my own org.for woman and here I am living my WHY. S.W.E.A.T stands for STRONG, WOMEN, EMPOWERING, ACHIEVING, TOGETHER.

Do you struggle with making time for workouts and maintaining a positive attitude with your health?  Have you considered pilates but just don’t know if it’s the right fit for you? Maybe you’ve struggled with a past injury or soreness with past workouts.  There is a solution and you don’t have to hate your workouts or spend hours sweating your butt off in order to get healthier and in better shape.

In this episode I talk with Rebecca Beckler.  Rebecca is no stranger to having to work hard and overcome adversity. In 2012 one of her daughters was diagnosed with Leukemia.  Unable to have time to go to the gym, she developed a pilates body suspension method and now is on a mission to teach that to others.  She encourages those who want to work at home to try this out, and tells us how 30 minutes a day can be enough to really get in shape and change our body composition.

Questions I asked:

  • Can someone who has been injured get in great shape?
  • What should our day to day diet look like?
  • How often should you eat a day?
  • Do I need to work out for a long time to get in shape?

Topics Discussed:

  • Keeping a positive mindset.
  • How long do you need to workout?
  • How our diet plays into getting in shape.
  • How feeling better helps us overall.

Quotes from the show:

  • “It doesn’t have to be crazy hard to live a healthy life.” @pilates949 @LindaMitchell #SisterhoodofSweat

  • Build yourself up rather than beat yourself up.” @LindaMitchell #SisterhoodofSweat
