Here’s just a few of the many pointers Alex shared:

How to stop shrinking and start stepping fully into our personal power

  • It's not something we can do alone.
  • The importance of investing in the right relationships
  • Pay attention to authenticity
  • It’s never easy to let go of people or a certain way of living, but the more you do it the easier it gets. You develop grit and resilience. It’s a muscle that you can strengthen.

The 4 root causes of cravings:

  1. Bacterial
    • On a biochemical level, we are as much bacterial as we are human.
  2. Nutritional
    • . Your body craves what it needs. Look at your cravings in more of a curious way.
  3. Emotional
    • . This gets shut out of dietary theory which is a shame. We are emotional creatures.
  4. Physical
    • . Sex and food. Vitamin P is the thing that we are all lacking. Play and pleasure.

How women can build a support system?

  • In-person events.
  • Ask, “Who lights you up? Who are you attracted to?”
  • Ask yourself, “How did you make friends when you were a kid?”
  • Be intentional about putting yourself around the right people.
  • Take a leap if you feel drawn to something. Other people like you will be there too.
  • Resource: Two summer camps for adults: Good Life Camp and Soul Camp.

Don’t delay and listen now to start putting you and your body as a priority.

Annette Fredskov is a 45 year-old mother of two, Emilie (16) and Viktor (14). She lives with the love of her life Kim.

She says, “Every morning I make the decision to have the best day possible. I choose to do all I can to be the best version of myself. I choose to focus on all the positive; positive thoughts and positive feelings and what I want. I look in my eyes in the mirror and say, I love you. I smile to myself and feel love”.

Annette's motto, “I can do it” is something she's said to herself thousands of times. She says, “I have programmed my mind and all the cells in my body, to believe that everything is possible. If I really want it, if I believe it, and am willing to work hard for it. Forget all about limitations and go for it. I can do it, and so can you.  Do whatever you want and put your mind to it”.

From October 2010, Annette has ran 660 marathons and 24 ultras. In 2012/2013 she ran 366 marathons in 365 days. In 2015, she ran from Denmark to Paris, France, 1130 kilometers in 19 days.

She says, “I am curious what I can do when my mind, spirit and body work together and I focus on my possibilities. Then anything is possible”.

In 2009, she was diagnosed with MS (multiple sclerosis). Today she has no symptoms of MS and medical examinations show no MS activity. She believes that her lifestyle with positive thinking and exercise has greatly contributed to her health. She says, “I have taken responsibility for my own life and it has given me freedom and high quality of life”.

Professionally Annette is a speaker, writer, and mentor. She is passionate about inspiring people to make the best of their lives, find peace, joy and balance and reach their goals.

She believes that, “We all deserve love, joy, laughter and passion - and even more love”.

_______________________________________________________

Intro to show:

It was wonderful to sit down and talk with Annette Fredskov from Denmark. She was incredible energetic and had a powerful message to share with us.

Annette says that she is a “normal” person who made the decision to be extraordinary. She started running only ten years ago and since then has ran 660 Marathons. In one year she ran 366 marathons in 365 days, running two marathons on her last day.

Another amazing part of her story is that she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2009. Since then however, she has kept running and believes that by “taking responsibility” of her life she has been able to not only rewire her brain but also bring health to her body. Since her diagnoses they have not found traces of MS in her body.

She credits her ability to run, to her passion and curiosity. In this episode she says that every morning she makes “the decision to have the best day possible” and that she is “willing to work hard and forget all limitations.”

Questions I asked Annette:

  • What would you say to someone who says they don't run? Who say “I can’t”?
  • How much did you rely on your mindset when you were running mile after mile and probably sometimes wanted to quit?
  • Why did you set the goal of running a marathon everyday?
  • Did you want to prove something? If so what did you want to prove?
  • How many running shoes did you run through the year of running?
  • How much water per day was it necessary to drink to run these marathons?
  • What was it like to run a marathon everyday and still take care of your house, your kids, the laundry, cook and clean and all of that?
  • Do you think if you stopped running your MS would return? (Question from online)
  • What did you eat while running and what did you do to recover?
  • What other types of things did you say to yourself to keep going when it got hard?
  • What is the greatest lesson you have learned running 366 marathons in 365 days?
  • How did you recover when you had an evening and morning marathon back to back?
  • Did you eat before and after your run?

Topics discussed:

How can someone overcome the mindset of thinking that they “can’t” do something?

  • It comes down to what you want. If you really want to do something you have to make it important.
  • You have to be willing to take small steps. If you want to run, walk first. Then build up.
  • Know it's never too late to start something.

Power of mindset:

  • You have to be intentional with what you tell yourself repeatedly and what you fill your mind with.
  • Focus on what you want and not what you don't want.
  • Faith is a muscle. If you do not have it now you can develop it.

Dealing with criticism:

  • Any big idea people will think your crazy.
  • People may think it's crazy. But it's not their dream.
  • The bigger the dream, the more you need to go after it
  • When you go for your dream, you may get resistance. But if you believe in your dream, people will come along.
  • Realize that it has nothing to do with you. It’s about them.
  • Understanding age is a mindset.

Facebook - Elaine or Jack Lanne

Before Jillian Michael's, Tony Horton, Kasiafit, Denise Austin, and Jane Fonda there was Jack the pioneer and "Godfather of Fitness", He is responsible for many of the fitness staples in the industry today some of which are the; protein bar, protein shake, leg extension, leg curl, cable pulleys, and so much more. Learn all about the making of this fitness icon and the wife beneath his wings, Elaine . She is 91 and rocking her age and still lectures all over the country.

I love, eat, and breathe fitness, so I was beyond honored to interview The First Lady of Physical Fitness, Elaine . She is the wife of fitness legend Jack .

I'm not going to lie.   I got pretty teary-eyed when I was preparing for this podcast about Jack and Elaine . Together they have created the most amazing legacy that we all still benefit from today. You know what they say; behind every great man is an incredible woman.

Elaine is nothing less than incredible! At 91 she puts us all to shame.  Elaine does full push ups, takes no medication, and is as sharp as a tack. In this episode we talk about how Elaine, the then smoker and donut lover, met Jack, The Godfather of Fitness and he changed her life forever.  Jack also had a life-changing event happen to him; perhaps that was why he was so interested in making an impact in other people’s lives.  Jack was ill as a teen and his entire life was changed from a lecture by Paul Braggs of Braggs Aminos. This was a lecture in which Jack was almost turned away because it was sold out. Paul made room for Jack and his mother right up front. Talk about divine intervention.

As Jack got older he wanted people to realize that age was just a number. He set out to prove it by completing surreal physical feats, one of which was his infamous swim from Alcatraz to the mainland with his hands and feet shackled behind his back towing a 1000 pound boat at 60 years young. Jack really stood in the gap as a pioneer.  He was responsible for so much of what we see today in fitness, from creating the selectorized weight machines, cable/pulley machines, and leg extension, to having the idea for The Smith Machine.  Jack and Elaine encouraged and introduced women to the weight room, back then they were of the thinking that women belonged in the kitchen and not in the weight room. The backwards thinking was that women would look like men if they weight trained.  Also the thinking in that day was men in sports shouldn’t weight train, because they wouldn’t be able to move as fast and if they were muscle bound and that it would slow them down. Jack ,The Godfather of Fitness, was amazing from the sheer feats of physical fitness he performed, to the machines he created that still we use today.  Jack was also responsible for creating the first protein shake and protein bar.  Jack was such a pioneer and an icon in the industry and his wife was right alongside him being on the air helping him do all that he did.  She is a fabulous lady and I am so inspired by her. I met her at the World IDEA Blog Fest and it was an instant connection. She was such a gracious lady.  I took a leap and asked her if she would do a Facebook live video with me and she did. It didn't take the first time so I had to get up the courage to go up and ask her again and she was such so gracious. We did it one more time and now I’m interviewing her for a second time on my podcast. ”Life favors the bold.”

1. Move it or lose it

7. What your doing right now is walking and talking tomorrow.

8. A sense of humor is important to longevity.

16. When someone has a birthday Elaine has a piece of cake but            she says Jack was always very disciplined and never deviated.

Coined as the "Indian Jane Fonda," Sarina Jain is the creator of the original Masala Bhangra® DVD series.  An AFAA® certified fitness instructor for over 24 years, she teaches classes ranging from step aerobics, total body conditioning, and many more.  She successfully moves, touches and inspires many people around the world with her knowledge and passion for Bhangra and Bollywood.  Recognized as a global game changer, Sarina has over 15 workout videos under her belt with Masala Bhangra® classes offered in over 20 countries around the world.

Although India’s glitzy Bollywood films have featured Bhangra and other folk-dances and music for quite some time, it took a vivacious, young Indian-American fitness instructor to devise the concept of choreographing Bhangra along with modern, funky dance moves to appeal to the American exercise industry. In the process, Jain has impacted the entire fitness industry, and has been heralded in the press throughout the U.S. and around the world.

Jain introduced her Bhangra/Bollywood-style fitness routine to the U.S. with her first workout tape in 1999, and has since directed and produced a total of twelve high-intensity, easy to follow workouts in her Masala Bhangra® DVD series.  Born in California, she started leading fitness classes at a very young age, and has been a certified fitness instructor for 23 years. She completed studies in marketing and public relations in Los Angeles, before founding her company, Masala Dance & Fitness, Inc. in 1999. She soon relocated to New York where she successfully cultivated a larger audience for her cross-cultural fitness ideas. In 2010, Jain was the new face for Nestle Fitness throughout Latin America, where 2.6 million cereal boxes include her “Masala Bhangra® Bollywood Style” DVD.

Jain proudly embraces her Indian heritage, and is an active member of the Indian-American community. “I lost my father to a massive cardiac arrest at the age of 47, my Mom was 40 years old.  After this tragic accident, I just had to do something about this and inspired me to step out of my comfort zone and be the first to bring Indian dance to the fitness industry at a global level. People fall in love with the beat of Bhangra,” Jain says, “the music combined with its sensuous, vigorous movements recreates the excitement that an occasion is being celebrated. People have so much fun; they don’t realize they are getting an awesome cardiovascular and muscle-strengthening workout. Bringing Masala Bhangra® to people all over the world is so gratifying—I am absolutely living my dream.”

In this episode we debunked the following fitness myths:

  • Carbs are the enemy.
  • Eating 5-6 small meals boosts your metabolism
  • Lifting weights will make women bulky.
  • Only women are obsessed with the scale.
  • Tilapia is the only good source of protein.
  • Cardio is the best way to get in shape.

In this episode we also discussed:

  • What a sample eating plan on The Cut Diet would look like for different individuals.
  • The transformations that took place after Morris and Obi reached out to recruit participants to do “The Cut” via Facebook.

 On a personal note:

I literally tuned into Steve Harvey's TV show and my friend Tiaja Piere was on talking with Steve Harvey, celebrity trainer Obi Obadike, and movie star Morris Chestnut. Obi and Morris co-authored the book "The Cut". Basically, Obi thought it would be a great idea to write a book after Morris had gotten into tip top shape in 12 weeks getting ready for the sequel to "The Best Man" his plan. People actually talked about Morris’s physique more than they talked about the movie. Obi and Morris decided to get together and write a book based on the training protocol that Obi used to get Morris into shape. The dynamic duo actually reached out to people on Facebook who would like to be part of the study. Tiaja Piere responded to their Facebook invitation to get in shape with many others, and as they say the rest is history. My friend Tiaja's transformation was astonishing and really peaked my interest, as I have known her for years. I also heard Obi and Morris on"The Model Health Show" with Shawn Stevenson and thought I would love to have them on my podcast. How is that for the power of positive thinking. You have to ask for what you want and then act upon it!
